Police ballistics experts are examining the 9mm pistol found in the city office where two businessmen were shot and killed last week.

Julian Williams, 37, was found on the third floor of the Icon building on the Foreshore at about 5pm on Thursday after staff reported hearing shots coming from the boardroom.

Police found Williams’s body with two gunshot wounds and business partner Herman Pretorius, 40, with serious head wounds and a 9mm firearm at the scene. Pretorius was taken to hospital but died on arrival.

Police, however, have since determined that the gun in question was not registered in either of their names.

Provincial police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander said: “This office confirms that the firearm was not registered in any of their names and unfortunately we cannot divulge any more information regarding the details of the rightful owner.”

Cape Town police investigators have opened inquest and murder dockets.

The Weekend Argus reported that financial website, Moneyweb, had uncovered a spat between the former business partners over shares in a separate company called SA Superalloys.

Williams was a director at SA Superalloys at the time of his death.

Williams was married with two children and founded Basileus capital - a private equity and developmental capital firm with former provincial ANC chairman James Ngculu.

Ngculu, who is chairman of the company, is set to step in as chief executive. The pair started Abante before Williams moved on to Basileus - and which Pretorius was still running.

Moneyweb initially raised questions about Abante’s high and consistent returns. - Cape Argus
