Cape Town - The National Council of Provinces has given its stamp of approval to the expropriation of land without compensation after eight of the nine provinces backed the report.
The approval of the report in the NCOP on Wednesday comes after the National Assembly’s 209 members voted in support of the report against 91 MPs.
In the NCOP, the ANC and EFF maintained that the amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution was necessary to correct the wrongs of the past.
Co-chairperson of the constitutional review committee Lewis Nzimande told MPs that they had followed all processes required to amend the constitution.
He said they will not do anything outside the law to do this.
He said they agreed with Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform Mcebisi Skwatsha that they must proceed with the legislative process.
“We agree with the deputy minister that part of what we capture in the report is that the executive must continue to produce legislation to respond,” said Nzimande.
Cathleen Labuschagne of the DA said the adoption of the report and the expropriation of land without compensation would trample on the Bill of Rights enshrined in the Constitution.
She said they still oppose the expropriation of land without compensation.
