Johannesburg – One person was killed and two other people injured at a funeral parlour in Soweto on Wednesday, police said.

The family went to pay the funeral cost of their deceased family member when they were robbed and attacked by four suspects, spokesperson Captain Mpande Khoza said.

One member of the family was shot dead, while a man and woman were shot and injured at the door of the funeral parlour.

"The family from Diepkloof in Soweto went to the Jabulani mall to withdraw money for the funeral cost of their relative who was meant to be buried on Saturday. When they arrived, they were attacked by four suspects who demanded the money be given to them," said Khoza.

Khoza said the man was shot and killed when he tried to protect the woman who was in possession of the money. The woman and the other man were also shot and taken to the nearest hospital.

"We would like to appeal to the community at large to avoid carrying large amounts of cash. If you have to pay someone, transfer such money to the other party."

Khoza encouraged the public to swipe rather than carrying cash with them.

"Criminals are monitoring you when you are withdrawing money from the bank, or they work with bank tellers who give them signals," said Khoza.
