Cape Town - Police reportedly fired teargas and rubber bullets at protesting students at the University of Western Cape in Bellville on Thursday evening.

According to social media reports, students burned refuse bins and built a flaming barricade at the steel gates to the university’s entrance to keep out police.

Students report that a tank breached the barricade, and chaos ensued when police started firing on the protesters.

A few social media post make mention of live ammunition being fired at the students, who are part of a nationwide protest against tuition fee increases.
