Durban - Five people were severely injured when two cars collided at the corner of West and Stanger streets in Durban late on Saturday night, paramedics said.

Rescue Care paramedics were called to the serious collision involving two cars soon after 10pm, Rescue Care spokesperson Ceron Lennox said.

On arrival they found that the one car was "inside a shop" in West Street with one person trapped in the wreckage.

The Durban Fire Department used the jaws-of-life to free him from the wreckage while advanced life support paramedics stabilised the man in the car.

Four other injured people were also stabilised on the scene and then transported to a nearby hospital for the further care that they required. At this stage the cause of the crash was unknown, Lennox said.
