Carletonville - Four people were critically injured and four others were less seriously injured when two cars collided head-on on Station Road in Carletonville early on Sunday morning, Gauteng paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at about 5.20am and found some people still trapped inside a Toyota, ER24 spokesperson Annine Siddall said.

"Three people were airlifted to nearby hospitals to receive further medical care and the five remaining patients were transported to hospital by other emergency services on [the] scene."

The circumstances surrounding the collision were not yet known, Siddall said.
