Durban - Police have confirmed they are investigating racist comments allegedly made by estate agent, Vicki Momberg, in a video that went viral last week.

Momberg, who was caught on cellphone video footage using the k-word in the presence of police had been a victim of a smash and grab in Johannesburg in March.

Acting police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khomotso Phahlane’s spokeswoman, Brigadier Mashadi Selepe, said that the police were investigating the matter and would comment at an appropriate time.

“The department is following up on the video clip and will pronounce on the course of action once all facts have been gathered. It is premature for the department to respond at this stage,” she said.

“The incident was reported immediately and is still under investigation. No further comments will be made until it has been concluded,” added Selepe.

Momberg was not available for comment on Sunday as her phone was on voicemail.

eNCA reported at the weekend that the woman had engaged lawyers to deal with the matter.

In the video she said: “I don’t want to deal with any k***** and I’m not prepared to deal with any k*****, I’ve just been smash-and-grabbed.”

“I can tell you now the calibre of blacks in this town (Johannesburg) vary from the calibre of blacks in Durban. They are opinionated, they’re arrogant and they’re just plain and simply useless.”

Her listed profiles on property websites Property24 and Private Property had been removed by Sunday.

Her company, Vicki Momberg Properties, was registered in October 2007 under a Durban North business address.

Momberg’s mother, Davina, in a recorded interview with News24, said she was shocked by the video.

“We didn’t bring her up that way,” she said.

“What they said there and what I saw, it is not what I agree with, definitely not.

“Who would do a thing like that in their right mind?” the mother told News24. “Nobody brings someone up in that way, I mean you just don’t do it.

“But,” she pointed out, “if you get hijacked and your life is threatened, who knows what you are capable of doing?”

Momberg’s mother revealed that the police officers who had been verbally abused by her daughter had escorted her to her flat because they were worried about her.
