Kimberley - Police are still searching for the suspect who shot a man and raped a woman at the notorious “lovers’ den” on Barkly Road last month.

A Galeshewe man was shot several times and his partner was allegedly raped twice by the unknown suspect, who surprised them while they were romancing at the popular spot just past Lerato Park on Barkly Road.

The suspect fired four shots at the man and he sustained several gunshot wounds. The suspect then allegedly raped the woman and forced her into the vehicle before he drove off in the direction of Bloemfontein.

While on the way to Bloemfontein, the woman was allegedly raped again. The vehicle, a VW Polo Vivo, later stalled and the woman, as well as two hitchhikers the suspect had picked up, escaped.

When the woman told the two hitchhikers what had happened, they immediately contacted the police in Galeshewe and informed them about the injured man.

The suspect was also nowhere to be seen when police drove to the place where the vehicle had stalled.

With the assistance of the victims, the police have compiled two identikits of the suspect. They are appealing to members of the public to assist in tracking him down.

According to police, he is believed to be a black male, between the ages of 24 and 30 years old. He is light in complexion, has a slender build and wore a beanie at the time of the incident. He is fluent in Tswana and has a scar on the left side of his face.

Anyone who can assist the police in the investigation is asked to contact Warrant Officer Godfrey Khatwane on 083 263 0750.

Police also warned romantic couples to stay clear of this open piece of veld as the shooting was the third incident this year where couples were attacked and robbed. After the first two incidents, suspects were arrested and the cases are still pending.
