The ANC national leadership heard through media reports that KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu had resigned on Monday afternoon.

Khusela Sangoni, the ruling party’s national spokeswoman, told Independent Media that they had not been briefed about Mchunu’s resignation.

“We have heard about the matter through the media,” she said, adding they would wait for a formal briefing from the party’s provincial leadership before commenting further on the matter.

Both ANC provincial chairman Sihle Zikalala and spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli could not immediately be reached for comment as they were currently in the ANC’s ordinary Monday meeting, according to a party official who answered Zikalala’s phone.

The ANC’s provincial leadership would brief the media at 6.30pm regarding the resignation, the official said.

Media reports suggest that Mchunu would be redeployed to the National Assembly in Cape Town, and that he reportedly sough guidance from ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe after the party’s national working committee directed him to resign.
