Business Unity SA (Busa) is pleased with the election of Jacob Zuma as ANC president, Busa CEO Jerry Vilakazi said on Thursday.

He said Zuma's election marked another critical milestone "in a maturing democratic South Africa".

"We are pleased that the election of Mr Zuma creates certainty for the markets as to who is likely to lead the country in 2009."

Vilakazi said great achievements had been made because of the interaction between government and business and that business would continue to work with the ANC leadership to improve the living conditions of South Africans.

He added that although organised business would be supportive of Zuma, there were challenges that needed to be dealt with.

"Of course as business we are conscious of the challenges that lie ahead. We are convinced that more work still needs to be done to address issues of unemployment and poverty."
