Pretoria – Democratic Alliance MP Glynnis Breytenbach was officially charged on Monday after she handed herself over at the Pretoria central police station.

“She handed herself over at around 7am as per our agreement that she will do so. She was officially charged and then brought to court,” said Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

The former senior prosecutor is appearing in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court for allegedly contravening the National Prosecutions Authority Act.

Outside court on Monday, DA members dressed in blue, demonstrated and sang anti-ANC songs.

Breytenbach faces charges of obstruction and defeating the ends of justice. These relate to an investigation dating back to 2012 when Breytenbach was regional head of the National Prosecuting Authority’s specialised commercial crimes unit.

The NPA claims Breytenbach wiped clean her laptop and shredded documents relevant to the internal investigation she was facing. She was later cleared of some 15 charges.

The Democratic Alliance believes the criminal charges are politically motivated.
