Deputy Communications Minister Dina Pule has purchased two new cars at a cost of R1,6-million, the Democratic Alliance said on Wednesday.

Pule revealed in response to a parliamentary question from the DA that she has acquired a Mercedes-Benz GL320 and an Audi Q7 at a cost of R868 000 and R757 366 respectively.

Cabinet is facing an outcry over luxury cars bought by ministers and has launched a review on whether perks, which include a car allowance of close to R1-million, should be cut.

DA MP Lindiwe Mazibuko said Pule's purchases made a mockery of the review and the ruling party's commitment to cutting unnecessary spending.

"The fact that another R1,6-million has been wasted on flashy cars is clear evidence that, in spite of all the ANC's posturing and rhetoric, there is no real commitment to cutting back on wastage and directing funds towards service delivery."

Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda is among those who have spent the most. He bought two cars worth R1,6-million, while Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande spent R1,1-million on a new BMW.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions has said spending so much on a car was an insult to the poor and called on the ministers to trade in their cars for more modest models. - Sapa
