Port Elizabeth - Officials in the Eastern Cape's Mbizana municipality have resigned as directed by the ANC's top leaders, the party in the province said on Monday.
“We have already replenished both Alfred Nzo and Mbizana local municipality,” spokesman Mlibo Qoboshiyane said.
“The Mbizana local municipality has also elected (a new) speaker, mayor and the chief whip.”
The Eastern Cape local government department appointed an acting municipal manager in terms of Section 154 of the Constitution.
Earlier this month, the African National Congress directed that the mayor, speaker, and chief whip tender their resignations immediately, and that the municipal manager's contract be reviewed.
This would allow the establishment of a new administration and clean governance structures. The municipality was placed under provincial administration last year.
This occurred after the unprocedural suspension of municipal manager Simphiwe Thobela, which the courts reversed. There had also been illegal council meetings.
At the time Qoboshiyane said President Jacob Zuma, ANC deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa, secretary-general Gwede Mantashe, deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte, and treasurer general Zweli Mkhize were fulfilling their obligation to address municipal problems. - Sapa
