Johannesburg - The Gupta family's financial dealings have now caught the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), who have opened an investigation into the family.
It has been reported in the Financial Times that the FBI has been investigating the family's financial transactions for a couple of months now.
The organisation's investigation is centered on the Gupta brothers' nephews, Ashish and Amol, who are US-based. According to the Financial Times, the two are directors of a US-based company.
The paper also reports that UK authorities are also looking into the family's financial dealings, specifically looking into links with banks such as HSBC and Standard Chartered.
The Gupta family has caused controversy over the past year as details of their alleged influence on government officials began to emerge when thousands of the family's emails were leaked to the media.
The emails, which have been known as the #GuptaEmails, showed how many government officials and state-owned company officials bent over backwards to accommodate the family in business dealings.
These emails are said to also form part of the FBI's investigation, the Financial Times reported.
The family's close relationship with President Jacob Zuma has allegedly enabled them to benefit financially from state resources.
A state capture inquiry is currently underway in Parliament with various former SOE executives being grilled on their involvement in dealings with the Gupta family.
On Wednesday, former Eskom boss Brian Dames told Parliament of a incident where he was asked by Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba's adviser to meet with one of the Gupta brothers
More people are expected to testify as the inquiry continues.
