His sexual escapades are in the past and now he wants to get back into active politics.

That is the message being put out by Narend Singh, the Inkatha Freedom Party politician and former minister who resigned in disgrace after being caught on camera in a sexual liaison with a married woman in a Durban hotel.

"There is no point in dwelling on the past, but one needs to learn from one's failures and move forward. I have served the community of KZN in different portfolios in what others say was an exemplary manner," Singh said on Monday.

He said the speedy support from the public in response to his return to politics had surprised him.

In a surprise move, Singh the province's former political head of the ministry of arts, culture and tourism has seen his political career revived by the IFP Party. The party's leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, announced last week that Singh will be made an MP in the National Assembly.

He was sworn in on Friday and will serve on the finance, agriculture and land affairs portfolio committees. He will spend several days a week in Cape Town.

Singh stepped down from his post last year after he was exposed in a sex-romp scandal which was captured on DVD and distributed on the South Coast. Copies of the DVD were sent to newspapers and were even sold on the streets.

Singh later publicly resigned, with his family supporting his decision. Since then he has been an active member of the party, but Buthelezi and the rest of the party leadership felt that Singh's talent was being wasted as he was no longer involved in government.

At the weekend, Singh said he had buried his failures, had learned from his indiscretions and had got through the tough times with the support of his family.

When Prince Nhlanhla Zulu passed away last month, it gave Buthelezi the opportunity to take Singh back to parliament.

IFP senior leader Blessed Gwala said the party was excited that Singh had accepted an invitation to serve in the national assembly, adding that the country was in dire need of someone of Singh's calibre.

"The party is confident that he will serve the people of this country with dedication. He is one of our strongest, youngest and energetic members. We are very excited that he will serve our people again," he said.

Singh was quoted by weekend newspapers saying that he had decided to drop the DVD investigation three months ago because he thought that it would not get him anywhere and that he wanted to put the past behind him.

A police investigation was established to determine who was behind the taking and distributing of the DVD of Singh's alleged steamy sex-romp with a Durban socialite.

Their 40-minute encounter was captured on camera and then distributed to post boxes, taxi ranks and schools on the South Coast.

Although the incident was a huge embarrassment to both Singh and the IFP, the party leadership decided not to expel him from the party.
