Former Agriculture Minister Derek Hanekom and his wife, Patricia, were granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) on Friday for supplying classified information and military hardware to the African National Congress during the liberation struggle.

The TRC's amnesty committee said in a statement on Friday that the Hanekoms were granted amnesty for passing on classified information to the ANC in 1983, attending illegal gatherings, provision of military hardware and passing on material to the members of the ANC units from 1988 to 1990.

Roland Hunter, a member of the special task unit of the Chief of Staff of the SA Defence Force, received amnesty for supplying the Hanekoms with classified information in contravention of the Defence Act.

Also granted amnesty was Janet Love for her role in Operation Vula.

She applied for amnesty for the unlawful possession and distribution of arms which were under the control of Operation Vula in the Vaal Triangle and Eastern Cape.

Another ANC member to be granted amnesty on Friday was Vusimuzi Ngcobo. Ngcobo murdered Bongani Kunene and stole his firearm at Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal on October 23, 1993.

The Committee found that the three applicants met the requirements of the Act N of full disclosure and that their acts were associated with a political objective. - Sapa
