Johannesburg -

The ANC's integrity committee will view the party's election list for Parliament and legislatures and could recommend the removal of candidates deemed unsuitable, the City Press newspaper reported on Sunday.

“The list conference has the final say and the integrity committee could actually recommend that some candidates could be pulled off the list for this and that valid reason,” the party's election head Malusi Gigaba told the newspaper.

The election lists would be compiled at a conference in Pretoria scheduled to begin on Monday.

The integrity committee - chaired by Rivonia trialist and former Robben Island prisoner Andrew Mlangeni - was established in March last year.

The ANC resolved to set up the committee during its national conference in Mangaung in December 2012 to ensure urgent action was taken to deal with members who faced allegations of improper conduct.

The newspaper quoted ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe as saying the party would be “tough” on corruption and had already removed people from positions.

He told the newspaper that party members found guilty in a court of fraud or corruption and sentenced to 12 months in prison would automatically be removed from the party lists.
