Cape Town - The Western Cape High Court has ruled that political parties should disclose their private funding.

The ruling was made on Wednesday with the judge ordering that Parliament has 18 months to make changes to the Promotion to Access of Information Act (PAIA).

The judgment will be sent to the Constitutional Court for confirmation.

Political funding has been a very contentious issue with a number of rights' groups calling on political parties to reveal who funds them.

Parliament has established an Ad Hoc Committee to look into party funding and various parties have submitted arguments for or against it.

The committee chairperson Vincent Smith has placed November as the deadline for committee to complete its  inquiry.

Some political parties such as the DA have spoken out against revealing political party funders.

While the ANC has supported the regulation of party funding saying it would lead to greater transparency.
