The ANC Youth League in KwaZulu-Natal is not divided into two camps, provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo said on Tuesday.

“I wish to clarify baseless media reports that I, as secretary, and my provincial chairperson Mthandeni Dlungwana are leading two camps regarding ANC 2012 leadership issues,” he said in a statement.

It was reported on Tuesday that the branch appeared to be divided in its support for ANCYL president Julius Malema and his executive, who face disciplinary charges.

The Mercury newspaper reported that Mtolo and deputy chairman Sboniso Duma were at odds over the province’s backing of Malema.

According to the newspaper, leaders backing President Jacob Zuma for a second term had tried to dissuade members from travelling to Johannesburg to support Malema when he appeared before a disciplinary committee.

Mtolo said there were no camps regarding the support for Zuma.

The ANC will elect new leaders next year.

“All South Africans know the ANC national executive committee that is led by Zuma has issued a clear command and directive to all ANC structures, its organs and members not to discuss leadership issues of 2012 either in support or against the current leadership,” said Mtolo. - Sapa
