After a number of setbacks, Free State Premier Beatrice Marshoff managed to announce her Executive Council in Bloemfontein on Monday.

Its expected announcement on Friday was cancelled when many of those due to be sworn in could not be found.

But on Monday the 10 MEC's were found, sworn in and warned that "they would not have the luxury of settling into their posts" as they would have to start work immediately.

Former African National Congress Free State chairperson "Ace" Magashule was moved from economic affairs to agriculture. Pule Makgoe was moved from the National Assembly to take up the MEC post for public safety, security and liaison. France Morule was named finance MEC and Zanele Dlungwana was sworn in as MEC for social development.

Former economic affairs MEC Sakhiwo Belot, was moved to health and Itumeleng Kotsoane is now MEC for local government and housing.

Mantsheng Tsopo was moved from health and now heads up education and Benjamin Malakoane is responsible for the tourism, environmental and economic affairs portfolio.

Former Free State legislature speaker Malefetsane Mafereka was made MEC for sports, arts, culture, science and technology.

Mafereka was suspended as provincial parliamentary speaker in 2000 when he was charged with the murder of a Welkom taxi driver in 1989. He was granted bail of R10 000 but later acquitted on all charges against him in the Free State High Court.

Seiso Mohai was moved from the National Assembly in Cape Town to become MEC for public works, roads and transport in the Free State.

Spokesperson Kgotso Tau said the premier had chosen a mix of experience and youth into the council where she hoped the youth would bring "energy and freshness" to the proceedings.

"It's a very balanced team, one the premier is confident will work as a collective," he said. - Sapa
