Delayed voting for the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) in the Eastern Cape has concluded with the election of Phumulo Masualle as chairman, the SABC reported.

Masualle, health MEC for Eastern Cape and the national treasurer of the SA Communist Party, received 1031 votes over Eastern Cape finance MEC Mcebisi Jonas' 930 votes said the SABC.

After his election, Masualle told the public broadcaster that he would work to build the party ahead of forthcoming local government elections.

"We're heading for local government elections. There's work to be done in that regard to ensure that we place the organisation and its machinery ready for that," said Masualle.

The SABC also reported that ANC Youth League member Oscar Mabuyane defeated former Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Xola Phakathi for the position of provincial secretary. - Sapa
