The ANC's new national working committee (NWC) has replaced a number of people with allegiance to President Thabo Mbeki with others known to support ANC president Jacob Zuma.

Many of those named to chair sub-committees played leading roles the fierce succession battle that dominated the Polokwane conference.

Justice Minister Bridgitte Mabandla, who serves on the ANC's national executive committee, has been replaced by Limpopo politician Collins Chabane on the constitutional sub-committee.

Government policy guru Joel Netshitenzhe, who is still on the NEC but not the NWC, has been replaced by Lyndall Mafole-Shope as chairperson of political education and ideological work.

Other changes include:

* Mbeki's former head of presidency in the ANC, Smuts Ngonyama, who has been replaced by Arts Minister Pallo Jordan in a new portfolio called Communications and Drafting;

* Former Tshwane Metro mayor Smangaliso Mkhatshwa has been replaced by former Gauteng premier Mathole Motshekga as head of the commission on religious affairs;

* ANC Women's League deputy president Mavivi Myakayaka-Manzini is replaced in the NWC by Zuma's former advisor at the Union Buildings, Ebrahim Ebrahim;

* Housing Minister Lindiwe Sisulu replaces Public Works Minister Thoko Didiza as chairperson of the social transformation sub-committee;

* Social Development Minister Zola Skweyiya replaces Kader Asmal as head of the national disciplinary committee. Asmal was severely criticised by the previous NEC for his harsh treatment of former ANC chief whip Mbulelo Goniwe. Businessman Cyril Ramaphosa heads the appeals division of the disciplinary committee;

* Former treasurer-general Mendi Msimang is replaced by former Mpumalanga premier Mathews Phosa as head of the national finance committee;

* Former Northern Cape Premier Manne Dipico is succeeded by foreign affairs official Jessie Duarte as head of elections campaign;

n Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula is replaced by former defence force general Siphiwe Nyanda as chairperson of the peace and stability sub-committee, and

* National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete, who replaces Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota as head of the parliamentary political committee, is succeeded by Lynne Brown as chairperson of legislature and governance.

The NWC has created new portfolios such as organisation building and campaigns, to be headed by fiery youth league president Fikile Mbalula, and education and health, to be chaired by KwaZulu-Natal MEC Zweli Mkhize.

Transport Minister Jeff Radebe and Max Sisulu are retained as respectively head of policy and economic transformation.
