President Thabo Mbeki's parliamentary counsellor, Manne Dipico, has resigned from the National Assembly in order to concentrate his efforts on the upcoming local elections.

"He is going to be serving full time in the national election machinery of the ANC (African National Congress)," said ANC communications head Mpho Lekgoro on Monday at Parliament.

He said Dipico, who as a result of his resignation was no longer an MP, headed up the national election programme for the party last April.

"He was serving as Mbeki's parliamentary councillor and heading up the election programme," he said.

Lekgoro said it was decided Dipico would concentrate his efforts on the elections now.

It was unclear who his successor as parliamentary counsellor would be. - Sapa
