Western Cape premier Gerald Morkel has filled the vacant post in his provincial cabinet through a temporary reshuffle of portfolios.

The transport portfolio was left empty when MEC Piet Meyer nailed his colours to the New National Party mast and resigned on Monday.

Morkel has asked agriculture MEC Gerrit van Rensburg to take over transport on a temporary basis, while the other half of Meyer's portfolio, sport and recreation, will be watched over by health MEC Nick Koornhof.

Local government MEC Pierre Uys will take over finance as long as Morkel's close ally Leon Markovitz is ill.

Community safety MEC Hennie Bester will be caretaker for the other half of Markovitz's portfolio, business promotion and tourism. - Sapa
