Cape Town - Struggle veteran Ahmed Kathrada will on Sunday accompany US President Barack Obama on a tour of Robben Island, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation said on Saturday.

“Ahmed Kathrada was requested to and has agreed to accompany President Barack Obama and the US first lady tomorrow (Sunday) on their visit to Robben Island,” the organisation said in a statement.

“Ever since his release from prison, Mr Kathrada has been invited to accompany official delegations, groups and prominent personalities to the island. These range from heads of states, pop stars, business people, NGO’s and politicians.”

Kathrada, 84, served an 18-year-prison sentence on Robben Island after he was handed down a life sentence together with fellow anti-apartheid activists such as former president Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba and Andrew Mlangeni, among others. - Sapa
