Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has declared official provincial funerals for former MP Nelson Diale and Limpopo education MEC Thembisile Nwendamutswu, the presidency said on Wednesday.

“Diale was a courageous freedom fighter who sacrificed a great deal of his life to the liberation struggle, fighting for freedom of the oppressed and equal opportunities for all,” spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

The national flag would be flown at half-mast in Limpopo on Sunday, the day of the funeral.

Both Diale and Nwendamutswu were from Limpopo and died last week.

Nwendamutswu died in a private hospital in Pretoria on Friday. The education department said she had been ill, but could not provide further details. Diale died a day earlier, aged 79.

The Limpopo provincial government would release more details on the funerals.
