There are people being paid to destroy the National Freedom Party, chairman Maliyakhe Shelembe said on Wednesday.
“We are now aware that huge sums of money are paid to forces of darkness that should work hard to target the NFP as a project that must be destabilised and destroyed,” he told reporters in Durban.
Shelembe, who was fired in 2010 as the IFP's mayor of Umtshezi, in Estcourt, said the NFP would not be distracted by “forces of darkness and agents of evil”.
He declined to elaborate, saying: “It's too early to divulge the details.”
The party viewed the matter in a serious light and was investigating. The NFP intended winning at least 1.8 million votes in the 2014 elections.
“We want to be represented in all provincial legislatures, and we encourage our members to remain focused.”
The NFP was formed in January 2011 by former IFP leaders who left the IFP following a fall-out over who should lead the organisation.
The NFP contested the May 2011 local government elections and won the Nongoma and Edumbe municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. It gained influence in four more municipalities after it entered into coalitions with the ANC to form councils in hung municipalities. – Sapa
