Johannesburg - DA MP Sej Motau refused to speculate on Sunday on whether his move from the party's labour portfolio to economic development was linked to controversy about the party's position on employment equity.
“I would hope not.... Unless I'm told, I can't speculate why,” he said.
Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko announced on Saturday, that Motau would be replaced in the labour position by Kenneth Mubu.
The move followed DA leader Helen Zille's acknowledgement on Friday that the DA had erred in voting for the Employment Equity Act Amendment Bill.
She said the DA representatives on the portfolio committee that dealt with the bill were inadequately prepared when they voted for the bill.
“The many and varied submissions on the bill were rushed through the portfolio committee in four meetings,” said Zille.
A long parliamentary recess had also affected adequate debate on the bill within the caucus.
“On the day it was due to be debated and voted on in the house, the explanatory memorandum produced by our spokespeople was defective,” she said.
Zille said the DA would now propose amendments to the bill and vote against it if the changes were not brought about.
On Sunday, Motau said he was pleased with his new position.
