Renier Schoeman was elected as the new provincial leader of the New National Party (NNP) in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

Schoeman, an executive director of the NNP's federal council, replaces Danie Schutte who has retired from active politics.

Schoeman has been a member of Parliament for 13 years and served as deputy minister of education in former president Nelson Mandela's cabinet.

Schoeman said he was confident the party would not only gain support lost in the June general election, but also expand its support base in KwaZulu-Natal. - Sapa
