Johannesburg - Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has ordered the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB)to investigate former Jawitz Properties estate agent Penny Sparrow who is accused of making racist statements on social media.

Ministerial spokesman Ndivhuwo Mabaya said the organisation was requested to investigate and provide a report on the necessary action to be taken against Sparrow.

“The Minister of Human Settlements, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu has instructed the EAAB to report to her as soon as possible on the allegations and action that can be taken. A meeting has been confirmed with relevant role players, including the owners of the franchise Penny Sparrow is employed as an agent,” said Mabaya.

The meeting would take place on Tuesday. Sparrow could be removed from the EAAB registrar and barred from the property industry if found guilty.

On Sunday, Sparrow – a member of the Democratic Alliance – became the subject of outrage on social media when she referred to black South Africans on a Durban beach as “monkeys” who littered and caused trouble.

Jawitz have since distanced themselves from Sparrow’s statement.
