Struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the age of 87.
In the famous Rivonia Trial, Kathrada along with Nelson Mandela and others stood trial for treason against the apartheid government between 1963 and 1964. The pair served together Robben Island before being transferred to Pollsmoor in Cape Town.
Kathrada later served as an ANC MP under Madiba, who remained a close friend until his death.
