Want to know where most carjackings are reported? Or which police station receives the most reports of burglary and robbery? IOL took a look at the most recent release of South Africa's crime statistics to try to answer some of these questions.

The statistics, released last month by the South African Police Service and covering the period April 2011 to March 2012, cover all crime categories from theft and burglary to murder and kidnapping. We selected ten of these categories and sorted them by the number of cases reported at each station across the country.

The graphs below list the top ten reporting stations for each of the ten selected categories. These are the total number of cases reported at each station and have not been adjusted for the population or makeup of each of the station areas.

* Residential burglary refers to home break-ins where no-one is home. Robbery refers to those break-ins where a victim is present.
