Oudtshoorn -

Police were searching on Monday for a three-week-old baby kidnapped by a young woman in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape police said on Monday.

The baby disappeared while in the company of a 17-year-old girl in front of the town's Spar supermarket on Thursday last week, Captain Malcolm Pojie said.

The baby’s mother left the child with her 14-year-old nephew and the girl while fetching money from the local bank. When she returned to the supermarket, the young woman had disappeared with her baby.

The stranger allegedly asked the nephew to go and buy a memory stick with a R10 note, while the biological mother was at the bank. The stranger and the baby then disappeared.

The mother reported the kidnapping to the police in Bridgeton, Oudtshoorn, on Thursday afternoon.

The young woman was light in complexion. She was wearing blue jeans, a colourful blouse with flowers, and a white jacket with blue stripes. - Sapa
