Seven dangerous awaiting-trial prisoners have escaped from the Mthatha Correctional Centre, the department of correctional services said on Monday.

Spokesman Zama Feni said they escaped on Sunday afternoon, whilst they were being served their supper.

“With a firearm they had, they forced their way out of the centre and a correctional official was shot and injured,” he said in a statement.

The warden was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Mthatha, for an X-Ray examination. The escapees were Sakhumzi Mvoko, 27, of Mthatha who was arrested for robbery, vehicle theft and escape from custody.

Sibusiso Jejana, 27, of Mthatha who was arrested for robbery, Odwa Sithole, 27, of Mthatha who was arrested for robbery and escape from custody.

Khaya Bulo, 39, of Zimbane Location in Mthatha who was arrested for robbery, murder and escape from custody.

Bongani Daluka, 33, of Mqanduli who was arrested for robbery. Xolani Buthelezi, 32, of Durban who was arrested for robbery and Yandisa Bila, 30, of Ngqeleni who was arrested for robbery.

Acting Regional Commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast said a team of correctional officials and the police was on the lookout for the escapees. “We will conduct a thorough investigation to find out how this unfortunate incident took place and who the firearm found its way into the hands of the offenders,” he said. - Sapa
