Johannesburg - The ANC in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature has appointed Sochayile Khanyile as the new chief whip for the ANC caucus.

Khanyile's appointment follows the resignation of Brian Hlongwa as ANC chief whip last week.

Hlongwa resigned under a cloud and just days before the ANC integrity committee was expected to table a report recommending his expulsion from the Gauteng executive.

Hlongwa was implicated in a scathing report by the Special Investigative Unit that uncovered corrupt and fraudulent dealings worth R1.2 billion while he was MEC of health in Gauteng.

Khanyile was introduced to the ANC caucus on Tuesday.

He has a long history with the party having previously served in the ANC Youth League and as regional secretary for the ANC in Ekurhuleni. He has been a member of the ANC Gauteng PEC since 1996.

"Cde Sochayile brings with him a wealth of experience as a public representative. Having served as a Councillor at the Alberton Town Council TLC in 1995. He then proceeded to join the ANC Caucus in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature as Secretary to Caucus in 2008, joining the GPL as a Member of the Provincial Legislature from 2014 to date. In the GPL he served as Chairperson of the Safety Portfolio Committee and a Member of Oversight Committee on the Office of the Premier and Legislature (OCPOL)," said the ANC in a statement on Tuesday.

"We are convinced that the activism of Cde Sochayile as a seasoned activist of the mass democratic movement will bring invaluable organisational experience in the ANC Caucus in the GPL."
