Jan Hamman, a specialist photographer at Beeld, died at his home on Friday morning after a long battle with cancer.

Known best for his wildlife and sports photography, Hamman had a hand in the fame of cricketer Jonty Rhodes, with his image of the fielding legend diving for a ball, said Beeld chief photographer, Halden Krog.

His images were also a central part of high-jumper Hestrie Cloete's training regime, helping her refine her jumping technique and raise the bar to world-beating standards.

The youngest-ever chief photographer at the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Rapport, Hamman went on to join Beeld in 1975, where he also served as chief photographer, later becoming a specialist photographer on the newspaper.

Beeld showcased his work in a tribute exhibition at its offices last week.
