Bronx bomb was sixth attack this year

The car-bomb blast outside the Bronx nightclub in Green Point on Saturday night was the sixth such attack this year and the latest in a string of bombings in the Western Cape.

It is also the second gay nightspot to be attacked. The first was the Blah Bar, also in Green Point, which was bombed in November.

Three people have been killed and 106 injured in the bombings in the past two years.

This is a chronology of the most recent blasts:

- June 26 1998: A pipe bomb explodes outside the Mowbray police station N no one is injured;

- August 6 1998: A street vendor dies and another is injured in a blast in Bellville outside the building housing the special police task team investigating Pagad;

- August 25 1998: Two people are killed and 26 injured in a blast at the Planet Hollywood restaurant at the V & A Waterfront;

- December 18 1998: Wynberg synagogue is bombed - no one is injured;

- January 1 1999: Two people are injured by a car bomb at the V & A Waterfront;

- January 8 1999: A Kentucky Fried Chicken branch in Athlone is petrol-bombed;

- January 28 1999: A bomb injures 11 people outside Caledon Square police headquarters;

- January 30 1999: A woman is injured and a police car destroyed in a blast at the Woodstock police station;

- May 9 1999: A car bomb explodes outside Athlone police station;

- November 6 1999: Nine people are injured in a blast at the Blah Bar, a gay nightspot, in Somerset Road, Cape Town;

- November 28 1999: 48 people are injured in a blast at St Elmo's restaurant in Camps Bay;

- December 24 1999: Seven police officers are injured by a bomb planted in a refuse bin outside Mano's restaurant in Main Road, Green Point, and triggered by remote control by cellphone;

- January 12 2000: At least one person is injured when a bomb attached to a motorcycle explodes in front of the Wynberg Magistrate's Court;

- May 22, 2000: Police deactivate a pipe bomb - discovered by two homeless people - outside the New York Bagels restaurant in Sea Point;

- June 10 2000: Three people are slightly injured when a bomb, placed inside a Toyota Corolla, explodes outside the New York Bagels restaurant;

- July 18 2000: An explosive device planted in a dustbin at Cape Town International Airport causes minor damage;

- August 11 2000: Two people are injured when a car bomb explodes at the Constantia Village shopping centre;

- August 19 2000: The doorman of the Bronx nightclub in Green Point is slightly injured when a car bomb explodes outside the club. - Sapa
