South Africa's Chief Justice, Pius Langa, has been injured in a car accident in Johannesburg.

"Fortunately, I have no broken bones, but I have a few flesh wounds and some of them are quite deep," he said from his home in Houghton on Saturday.

Judge Langa spent the night in hospital for treatment and observation of his injuries, including facial wounds.

The accident happened in Houghton at about 2pm on Friday, Judge Langa said. "I was banged up a bit and my face does not look so good at the moment."

Asked if he would allow a photographer to take a picture of him, the judge declined, saying he "did not want to remember my face this way".

Speaking slightly unclearly on the telephone due to his injuries, Judge Langa said he would not be at work on Monday, because he did not want to frighten people.

But he would not be wasting time. "I am always working. I am working at the moment here at home and I often work from home, so I will keep my attention on my work," he quipped.
