Prison warder Leon Arendse arrived for work as usual last Sunday, but ended up incarcerated in his own prison that night.

Instead of sleeping in his comfortable bed at home, he ate a prison supper and slept under a scratchy prison blanket.

His colleagues in Malmesbury prison, who accused him of smuggling dagga into the prison, cornered him in a toilet.

He emerged empty-handed to face his colleagues, but fellow warders outside the lavatory allegedly saw a parcel of dagga flung out of the window. They picked it up and called the police.

Arendse appeared in the Malmesbury magistrate's court on Monday. He was released on a warning and told to return to court on September 21.

Arendse's arrest followed that of fellow warder Nzama Njoli, who was allegedly caught in possession of dagga while off duty.

Correctional Services spokesperson Esther Samuels said the warders at Malmesbury prison were determined to stamp out crime and drug trafficking among their members.
