KwaZulu-Natal education minister Ina Cronje has expressed disgust at the behaviour of pupils at the Durban Girls' Secondary School, who attacked their teachers with batons and broomsticks on Monday.

Cronje said she would not tolerate this kind of behaviour from pupils.

She has summoned all the parents to a meeting on Sunday.

"I am disgusted by this type of behaviour. It cannot be justified and I am prepared to take a hard line against anybody trying to take the law into their own hands.

"We have proper channels that can be followed and I will not tolerate this kind of lawlessness," Cronje said. "By having done this, the school, the department and, worst of all, the pupils, have been brought into disrepute."

She said that the circuit manager, the chairman of the school governing body and the principal had addressed the Representative Council of Learners and the school assembly on Tuesday.

"The circuit manager also met with educators and the principal. A substitute teacher for English will be employed by the school governing body and steps will be taken to procure the services of an Afrikaans teacher," said Cronje.

Mickey Pierce, spokesperson for the Association of Professional Educators in KwaZulu-Natal, said that if Cronje did not take stern action, the consequences would be "too ghastly to contemplate".

He said that there were long-simmering tensions between the pupils and the management at the school.
