Johannesburg - Princess Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton and his wife Carolyn have been injured in a car crash in Hazyview, near the Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga authorities said on Tuesday.

Morton suffered broken ribs and his wife a broken breastbone in the crash, in which a woman and a child died, said Mpumalanga community safety department spokesperson Joseph Mabuza.

“The accident happened on Friday just after midnight. We are not sure as to what really caused the accident,” he said.

Mabuza said the Mortons were travelling from the Kruger National Park to an unknown destination when their Mahindra collided with a Honda Ballade.

A woman and child in the Honda Ballade died. A third passenger in the car was not injured.

“The accident is being reconstructed, together with the police, to find out what happened,” Mabuza said.

Morton was released from intensive care on Monday, said Mabuza.

Morton wrote the international bestseller Diana: Her True Story in 1992 and a revised edition after her death, based on taped responses from Diana to his written questions.

He has also written the biographies of the Princess of Wales's son, Prince William and his wife Catherine; the White House intern Monica Lewinsky, with whom former United States president Bill Clinton admitted to having had an “improper relationship”; and United Kingdom soccer star David Beckham and his wife Victoria. - Sapa
