Port Elizabeth - Port Elizabeth police have opened an inquest docket after a three-year-old boy burnt to death in a house fire.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said Elwyn Melville, 3, his mother and another male person were asleep at a house in Korsten when a fire broke out on Friday night.

Naidu said the child's mother woke up after smelling smoke and informed the male person that the house was on fire.

"When they ran outside, they realised that the child was still in the house. By this time, the flames had engulfed the house and the child burned inside," said Naidu.

The cause of the fire is unknown and police have opened an inquest docket.
