Police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart said the family was asleep when their home caught fire.

She said police and the fire department were called to the scene where the home was already engulfed in flames.

The mother, Vuyokazi Klaas, 35, and her twins boys Abongile and Bonginkosi Klaas, aged four, died.

The father, 42, who was the sole survivor, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
