Willowvale - A 43-year-old man was arrested for allegedly hacking his father to death with an axe in Willowvale, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the 77-year-old man died on Tuesday at Zintakumbeni, Willowvale. The attack happened at about 3.30 pm.

"The daughter of the deceased heard a scream emanating from her home," recalled Manatha. He said the woman's daughter, who had been washing clothes near a community water tap not far from her home, went to check what was happening.

"She met the suspect at the doorway with an axe that was covered with blood. She saw her father [deceased] in a pool of blood already dead."

He said the woman's daughter alerted community members and Willowvale police were informed of the murder. They traced and arrested the suspect.

"The motive for the murder is not known at this point in time," said the captain, adding that the deceased was only identified as "Tallman". His son is due to appear in the Willowvale Magistrate's Court on Friday to face a murder rap.
