Many social media users have reacted with suspicion to news of the apparent suicide of The Lost Boys Of Bird Island co-author Mark Minnie in the Eastern Cape.

The former policeman, who co-wrote a sensational book about an alleged paedophile ring involving National Party cabinet ministers, reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Minnie is believed to have been visiting at a friend's farm at the time of his death.

Police have confirmed Minnie's death and say that no foul play is suspected.

What is even more disturbing is that there is such a group of people in the shadows that are this threatened by the book, and still have the capability to silence people.

Pedophilia and power make a very dangerous combination. Protect Chris at all costs!

#thelostboysofbirdisland CO-author Mark Minnie found dead. Police don’t suspect foul play. How could it NOTbe foul play?

Mark Minnie bravely exposed the horrendous truth with his co-author. Speculation unwise, but why commit suicide shortly after release of an acclaimed book? This needs intense scrutiny. Sympathies to his family. #RIPMarkMinnie https://t.co/f8hz2mDIDh
