"An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth," said Alexa Kirsten on Monday, when Cape High Court Judge Dennis Davis asked what treatment she would mete out to the man who stabbed her 17 times.

Her attacker was also convicted for the murder of her neighbour.

"I know it doesn't happen here, but given the waste of life and what happened ... " she said.

Kirsten was testifying in aggravation of sentence in the trial of Elton John Lourens, 29. Judge Dennis Davis on Monday found Lourens guilty of theft, housebreaking with the intention to steal, robbery with aggravating circumstances, the attempted murder of Kirsten and the murder of newly married academic Lisbe Smuts .

Lourens had broken into two Wellington residences on different dates before going to Smuts's Wellington home, where he murdered the University of Cape Town literature lecturer and threw her body into the pool.

Kirsten heard Smuts screaming and went to help her, but Lourens stabbed her 17 times and left her for dead.
