Fraud charges against former Border Rugby Football Union (BRFU) president John "Tiger" Ncinane were withdrawn in the East London magistrate's court on Friday.

Ncinane was charged with fraud for allegedly misusing R33 000 of rugby development funds. It was alleged Ncinane used the money to pay for repairs to his personal vehicle.

This was followed by suspensions by both the BRFU and the SA Rugby Football Union (Sarfu). Border Rugby (Pty) Ltd chief executive Guy Hedderwick was also suspended.

After criticism from the sport fraternity that threatened his position as an African National Congress MP, Ncinane resigned as BRFU president on October 26.

He was followed by Hedderwick, who is now the managing director of the Cape Town-based Premier Soccer League Club, Hellenic.

Reacting to the withdrawal of the charges Hedderwick said: "I am very happy for John and I feel relieved now that the whole thing is over."

Acting BRFU president William Caga said he was also happy for Ncinane and their doors were still open if he wanted to come back.

"BRFU never took him to court and if he wants to come back, he can, because he was an asset in our administration. This was just based on misjudgement," said Caga.

Ncinane was not available for comment. - Sapa
