Former Mpumalanga deputy speaker Cynthia Maropeng was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for fraud in the Nelspruit Regional Court on Friday.

SABC radio news said two of her co-accused - Wilson Ngwenya and Nicholas Siboza - were also sentenced to seven years imprisonment each and former legislature secretary Alfred Mahlangu received five years imprisonment.

The four were found guilty of stealing over a R1-million between 1995 and 1997. The money was taken from a national government fund intended for African National Congress provincial constituency projects.

The four are to appeal against the sentence.

The ANC in Mpumalanga welcomed the sentencing.
