Former Ladismith Mayor and former deputy president of the NPP, Jeffrey Donson was sentenced to five years imprisonment in the Oudtshoorn Regional Court on Friday, Western Cape Police said.

"Donson received five-years for statutory rape against a teenage girl, as well as 18 months for charges of indecent assault," said Captain Malcom Pojie.

Donson must serve at least a third of the five-year sentence before being considered for parole. He is currently out on bail of R3 000 and his attorneys were appealing the sentence, Pojie said.

He was convicted of indecently assaulting and having sex with the girl in 2004, who was then 15-years-old.

Donson had served a term as mayor at the time.

The complainant, now 18, who cannot be named, did not go to the police at the time, but reported the incidents to her mother, who then contacted the police.

Previous reports on the girl's testimony in court revealed that she had gone with Donson to a rubbish dump in Calitzdorp on August 13, 2004, where Donson had touched her in his car and given her a "love bite".

She said that he then took her to his office on a number of occasions where he had sex with her.

She said when she told Donson her age, he replied: "When you are 16, we can go out legally." - Sapa
