Johannesburg - A man was killed while another was left injured after a truck overturned on a highway in the Free State, police said on Friday.

The incident happened in the morning on the N1 south highway, approximately 45km outside of Bloemfontein.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene to find the truck lying on its roof on the side of the road.

"The body of a man, in his 20s, was found lying inside the vehicle while the second man was found lying a few metres away from the truck.

"Paramedics assessed the patients and found that the man, lying trapped inside the truck, had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead."

The second man, also in his 20s, who had been ejected when the truck overturned was assessed and found to have sustained moderate injuries.

Meiring said the man was treated for his injuries and was thereafter transported to Pelonomi Hospital for further treatment.

He added that the exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
